Technology Offers Possibilities for Simplifying Home Entertainment Systems

If you’re tired of having lots of pieces of home entertainment equipment littering your living room you’re not alone. This over abundance of home entertainment electronics, or “Set Top Fatigue” as it’s called by some industry analysts, is the frustration that’s caused by having an enormous number of individual pieces of electronics in one’s living room. For example, you have a DVD player to watch movies from your personal library or that you’ve rented, you have a video gaming platform, probably still have an old fashioned VCR, you have a digital receiver from your satellite or cable TV company, and you obviously have the TV itself. There’s also a good chance that you have another set top box that can bring media from your computer or directly from the Internet such as a SlingBox, an Apple TV, or a Vudu. All of these devices take up a lot of space, litter your coffee table with remote controls, and create a tangle of cables that you pretty much need an electronics engineer to decipher.

There are some solutions to this problem though that don’t involve becoming a Luddite. The key is to eliminate individual devices without eliminating their functions in your home entertainment system. In other words, do away with redundancy. First of all, you can probably get rid of your VCR. Most movie titles are being published on DVD these days and with Digital Video Recorders widely available, you won’t need a VCR to record TV shows. Plus, with the ability that many home computers have to burn video onto DVD’s that can be played in any DVD player, you won’t need a VCR for home movies either.

The second piece of equipment that you should eliminate is the DVD player. While this advice may seem to be too much after having gotten rid of the VCR because the DVD player replaces many of its functions, a stand alone DVD player is also really redundant. That’s because many other devices are capable of playing DVD’s. For example, the Sony Play Station 2 and the Sony Play Station 3 can both serve as DVD players in addition to serving as gaming platforms. In fact, the Play Station 3 can even play Blu-ray discs in high def resolutions of up to 1080p. The Microsoft Xbox 360 can do the same with standard DVD’s and HD-DVD’s. In fact the only modern video gaming system that can’t replace a DVD player is the Nintendo Wii. Also, if you want to upconvert standard DVD’s to near high def resolutions, you don’t need a special DVD player to do it. The Sony Play Station 3 can do that as well.

The ultimate solution- one that will eliminate the need for a DVD player, a video gaming system, a receiver, a DVR, and a box to download media from the Internet- is a media center computer. These devices combine the functions of many other set top boxes into a single unit, and while significantly more expensive than normal computers, may actually cost less than the some total of all the devices that they replace. At the very least, media center computers will make the cabling simpler and sharply decrease the number of remote controls that you have to keep track of. Plus, you’ll be able to surf the Internet, email, and get work done from the comfort of your living room.

All that it takes to simplify your home entertainment system is to get devices that perform several different functions instead of just one or two.

I have an LCD monitor with the standard 15-pin monitor cable. I have a vcr/dvd combo unit that only has RCA inputs/outputs, plus cable input/output. Is there any way to connect the monitor to the player?

Some LCD Monitors comes with RCA input ports. Since it didn’t come with any, you might need svideo to VGA converter. The converter costs about $100, and has svideo resolution of 640×480.

Where Are The Facts About Outsourcing

Outsourcing of jobs to offshore companies has been a hot-button issue since the 1960s when the United States began losing automotive manufacturing jobs to Japan. In recent years, the outsourcing of technical jobs has revived the debate which became one of the top issues in the 2004 presidential campaign. However, actual facts and statistics about the effect of outsourcing on the American economy are hard to come by. Rhetoric, not facts, dominate the discussion of whether outsourcing has an effect on the economy.

There is a serious dichotomy between the beliefs of average Americans and those of economists and other experts. For example, a Zogby International Poll showed that 71% of Americans believe that outsourcing hurts the economy but when the Wall Street Journal asked the same question of economists, only 15% felt that outsourcing had a negative effect.

Opinions on outsourcing tend to be divided by economic status rather than political persuasion. For example, some Republicans in the House and Senate believe that outsourcing has a terrible effect on the economy and that legislation should be enacted to stop it. However, conservative think tanks like the Heritage Foundation and Republicans with ties to big business believe that the threat of outsourcing has been over exaggerated.

Liberals are also divided about outsourcing. The Democratic party has traditionally been the party of labor in the United States but it was a Democratic president, Bill Clinton, who shepherded the North American Free Trade Agreement through Congress, a treaty which most experts agree facilitated the current outsourcing trend.

For every argument for outsourcing, there is another argument against it. For example, the Heritage Foundation argues that despite outsourcing more Americans are employed than ever before and that jobs continue to be created to compensate for those lost overseas. Anti-outsourcing advocates point out that gross wages are dropping because the jobs that are being created are low-level service sector jobs, not high-tech jobs to replace the ones that are being lost.

The Heritage Foundation, citing the Organization for International Investment also argues that for every job outsourced, another is “insourced” to the United States from another country, often at a higher rate of pay than the job lost. Anti-outsourcing advocates say that those numbers can’t be accurately verified.

What is clear is that until the federal government conducts accurate research into the effects of outsourcing on the United States economy, there will be no definitive answer one way or the other.

How to Build Your First Copywriting Portfolio

Last month I asked my readers to tell me what baffles them most about the business side of copywriting, and two readers said “getting started!” So that’s what I’ll show you how to do here.

It’s the old “What comes first? The chicken or the egg?”, applied to a new career in copywriting.

One of the major hurdles faced by new copywriters is the book, or portfolio. Or more specifically, the fact that there is none.

How does a new copywriter get samples, and work, if he needs samples to get the work?

I know how it feels to be in that position,and so does every freelance copywriter! No one is born with samples.

But unlike the pre-Internet copywriters, who had to figure it out for themselves, YOU can ask your online colleagues!

So here it is in a nutshell: three ways you can blast past the number one obstacle to getting started as a copywriter and get work when you do not yet have a portfolio, or even one lousy sample.

Solution #1. This one is the easiest and may even have occurred to you.

Do it for free!

When I started out I quickly learned that small nonprofits were happy to accept free creative services. I also knew that I could bargain free for more control.

A common complaint among copywriters is that a well-meaning but misguided client can muck things up, and the end result may be nothing like what you envisioned.

So I told my non-profit client, a small women’s shelter, that I’d do a package for free, but I had to have complete creative control.

This allowed me to show a piece in my portfolio that was really me. In fact, the photo on the front of the envelope WAS me!

Not only did the experience give me a substantial sample, but it also allowed me to test my direct marketing skills.

The package wasn’t a blockbuster. But it didn’t fail either. It did tell me how good I was, and I was slightly deflated with the results. But hey, back then NOT failing was kind of like winning!

Solution #2. Look at friends and family. I’ve never used this idea but many of my coaching students have. They look at friends, family, colleagues, whomever they know in life or business, and offer to do free work.

Actually, I advise my coaching students to offer to do free work and if the client likes it enough to use it, THEN they should get paid. It is a simple proposition:

“I believe I can help you get more leads, or sales. Let me write a promotion. If you also think it will work, use it. If you use it, you benefit from my work. Only then will you pay me.”

Important: Get this agreement into a contract!

Solution #3. Hook up with a copywriter’s coach and ask to see samples. I do this all the time with my coaching students who have no samples.

When the moment comes that the potential client asks for samples, send samples from your coach’s portfolio.

Write in the email:

“Here are some copywriting samples. I work closely with veteran copywriter (name of coach) to ensure maximum results for your promotion, and this is the level of quality you can expect from working with me. My site isn’t up right now but you can take a look at (name of coach)’s site.”

It works like a charm.

This approach works best when you are working with a coach who has worked in many, most, or all niche markets, like me.

So this is my unplanned opportunity for a bit of self-promotion. Hey, I’m a direct marketer after all!

Where can i find an universal logic board to be used on hard disks?

if there’s no site, any suggestion on how to build one will be apreciated
I knew that, thats why i keep on searching .
But Fibonacci, i am sure the recovery labs got them, i dont think they use one different to another to do the recovery process based on different brands.
It is likely for they to use one single board and when have recover a Toshiba for example, they load Toshiba commands on the eproms.
And its for the recovery process that i need that.

If you are talking about Hard Disk Drives, such as ATA and SCSI drives, then there is no such thing as a “universal” logic board. The logic boards are proprietary. Each manufacturer uses a different logic board for different drives. Different models also have different boards. Building one would be next to impossible for a modern drive… at least by conventional means. The boards use intelligent circuitry and are integrated into the HDD itself. Hard Disk Drives are so common and cheap today, I see no reason to build one…. unless it’s for education or research. Good luck.

i went to tmobile and asked an associate what was up-
they informed me that the samsung gravity is the first samsung phone that uses a five bar battery instead of a three bar. So the fifth and fourth bar go away within an hour but the rest of it lasts for a pretty long time. When it gets down to one bar it lasts for way longer than you would anticipate.
but overall this phone is absolutley amazing!

In this process, the client has the option of emailing, faxing (to a toll free number), uploading onto a secure server or just placing the books in the computer which can be then remotely accessed. The service provider then connects to the client’s computer using a remote desktop access service, such as Secure VPN. The client will then have access to the updated books next morning right on his computer.

•3.       Application Service Provider(ASP) Bookkeeping Process :

In this process, the client either sends the books via email, fax (to a toll free number) or just uploads the books to a secure server. The service provider then updates the books using any of the preferred Online Accounting Software available, a good example being quickbooksonline.com. The client then has to just login to the Online Accounting Software in order to view the books.

Can I attach a car battery to an electric fence wire just by the leads?

The battery pack I got for an electric fence doesn’t have room for a car battery in it and it isn’t rechargeable. It seems to me more sensible to get a car battery. Can I just attach this to the wire with leads? Do I have to cover it in some way to protect from rain? Thanks

No you need a charger that causes the charge to pulse. A battery won’t do that. Battery powered fence chargers don’t work very well or last very long. You should get one that plugs in to the wall. They are much cheaper than battery powered chargers.

How 2 turn wireless optical mouse’s power off?

Ive got a Microsoft wireless optical mouse 3000 which is powered by a single AA battery. After I disconnect it from my laptop, its red light still glows underneath. There is no button 2 turn it off. Will it drain the battery if I dont remove it altogether?

When you move it does the light get brighter? I Imagine it will.

i think the adopter is a little warm but i just noticed that everytime i used it there was this pop up or small window which says there is somethign wrong with the battery.

Does the power adaptor feel warm? is your battery good? try moving the power connector on the laptop to see if it makes contact.
