Anyone know of any IT certification(s) I can earn in under a year that I can use to work from home?
I have 15 years of Finance and Accounting background and would like to crossover to the IT area. I would like to earn a certification that I can use to work from home, perhaps freelance. Anyone know of a good, ‘relevant’, certification I can earn in less than a year (studying full time) and preferably that can be studied online or correspondence method. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you are creative then go for a course in website design because there is no shortage of clients, you can work from home and there are lots of training materials online .
If you are interested in this, you can take a 3 exams to become a Master CIW Designer. This is what their website say " Master CIW Designers develop and maintain Web sites using authoring and scripting languages, create content and digital media, and employ standards and technologies for both business-to-business and business-to-consumer e-commerce Web sites. Master CIW Designer certification can lead to a successful career as a Web designer, creative director, Web marketing/ business specialist or art director. Candidates must pass three required CIW exams to become a Master CIW Designer."
Please see http://www.ciwcertified.com/training/master-designer.asp for more details.
Their course can be taken online or by buying the training materials for self study.
However, I am not sure how this may be relevant to your past experience.
With your background in Finance and accounting, I will suggest if possible, to become a Microsoft Certified Business Management Solutions Specialist – Financial Series for Microsoft Dynamics AX or NAV.
For AX you can take Exam MB6-818: AX 2009 Financials
This certification exam measures your ability to understand and articulate how to set up and use the Microsoft Axapta financial modules including General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Fixed Assets.
See http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/Exams/MB6-818.aspx for details.
For NAV take Exam MB7-838:
NAV 2009 Installation & Configuration
This certification exam measures your ability to understand and articulate how to install and configure Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 effectively, and use this information to adequately convey solutions to other users.
See http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/Exams/MB7-838.aspx
Same applies to GP. See http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exams/dynamics/527.mspx
For a wider scope, your other option is Microsoft CRM 4.0 please see
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exams/dynamics/633.mspx for details.
Although this might take longer than a year to master, It has better prospect career wise and fits in well with your experience.
My guess is that , there are few consultants out there with these certifications. With your experience, you can add a lot of value for your prospective clients.

You do not need a certification to work from home. In reality all you need is a computer, internet and basic English skills.
