Am I being scammed on Craigslist? Please read closely?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

So I went through several job openings posted on craigslist in my area, and of course, there are several bogus ones, like people looking for "personal assistants", "data entry clerks", or "@home receptionists".

I sift through them drudgedly, and come to find one that actually seems possibly MORE suspicious. An ad for a telecommuting "personel asistant". Nevertheless I message him, giving my phone number and name and everything. @5:30am he calls me, hard to understand but speaks enough English. He tells me he’s responding to my email and wants me to try out being his personal assistant, and I accept. He emails me, asking that I send him information, telling me his age and his profession(doctor), who travels internationally and is in England right now.

He tells me he’s going to send me a Cashier’s check or money order for an amount, with my weekly pay added. Instructs me to deposit it and then follow further instructions once I get the money. Which are somewhere along the lines of buying stuff for an orphanage, something he does on the regular.

So I’m asking you guys, does it sound like it’s possibly a scam? He gave me his number, even called me. He has a regular email, not like "jobs2010" or something. And his claims go along with how he sounds.
Could there be something he could gain by sending me a Money Order or Cashier’s check? At worst it bounces, or they try to pin something illegal on me and I defend myself? Otherwise, I’m pretty convinced he’s legitimate.

Please give me any and all input or questions or concerns, I want to make sure, but I guess I’m just waiting to see if he actually sends money so I can do as he says.
But I am not giving him anything nor have I sent him anything. At worst I pay a fee for his money order/cashier’s check bouncing right? and he gets nothing out of this?
So would it be a good idea to wait a few days or even longer after depositing the money to make sure it goes through and all that?
He’s in England for three weeks*
As far as I’ve read, he’s not going to be asking me to send money anywhere, just for me to buy toys and such for orphanage children and send it to them.

Could I be getting scammed into donating to an orphanage?

What will be my take home pay in Boston, MA?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

I’m not really familiar with the tax rate in Boston. Currently I live in Florida. I will be moving to Boston and telecommuting in January for the same job (so I am assuming I’ll be taxed the Massachusetts rate). That said, what would be my estimated tax $$$ (federal included, I claim 1 dependent and take a standard deduction) if I make 80,000? I will be renting an apartment as well (00/mo) and think I heard I can get some type of state tax credit for that…?

Thank you!
I should have said I claim myself. I don’t have any dependents. Single, no children. Think college grad with a very good job but no assets (and thankfully no debt).

Where is the best URL/LINK to help someone find a legitimate 'telecommuting' job?

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

A friend of mine who was severely injured in a car accident (his vehicle was slammed into, by a drunk driver who was trying to send a TEXT MESSAGE, while driving!) is now confined to a wheelchair (hopefully, not for the rest of his life) and needs to have a job that he can do from his home computer, which I understand is called "TELECOMMUTING."

He’s never done this kind of work before, but I understand that AT&T (for example) employs 7,000 people nationwide, who stay at home and do their work assignments by computer, without having to do any traveling, at all. That sounds like the ideal situation for my friend, and for others, too, considering that in the USA, gasoline prices are now over /gallon.

Anyway, I’d like any links that you know about, that offer legitimate employment to someone seeking that kind of work. I’d be grateful for whatever information you could share with me, regarding this, and I thank you (in advance, on behalf of my friend) for your assistance.

Is an Online College a Good Idea for Me to Break into IT like I have Always Wanted to do?

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

I have primarily worked in the residential/commercial real estate/development industry. However, during that time I have been part of a software implementation involving JD Edwards (now PeopleSoft or Oracle?) and part of website design/maintenance. I loved it! No matter where I work, I’m always drawn towards IT. The fact of the matter is that the economy tanked, I was laid off, and happened to have a child at the same time. My life is upside down, but I know that I still want to work in IT. Where do I begin? I have an Associates in Marketing. I was looking into getting my BA in IT with Western Governors University online. I enjoyed web design, but feel that that is not going to be in demand in the future with the templates they have out now and will improve upon. All my networks/contacts are in the real estate/development industry. I have been unable to obtain IT contacts. The ones I’ve worked with have been so withdrawn as if I was going to steal their secrets and then their jobs right out from under them. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate some advice on how to begin my path and what emphasis is best to head down? I hear Security will be in high demand. What mentality is best for that type of work and how hard is it to get into with the security clearances needed?

PS – I’m also living in a rural area not too outrageously far from DC, but what IT jobs are best for telecommuting?

Learn How To Make Money Quick Without Having To Get A Job

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Like many people in the year or two I’ve seen my income shrink my expenses increase and my stress level increase! Why is it that we live in the land of plenty but yet it seems like the doors are sealed in concrete on anything that I try?

Have you ever felt like this? This feeling can be especially burdensome ,when you are the man of the household and know that you have to support the family Going home everyday to my kids and seeing their smiling faces is a great motivator. I knew that I had to do something to change our bank account that had been lost during the great recession of 2009.

I needed something that would allow me to make money on the side and potentially grow it into a full time income. My commission sales job that I had been at for 5 years had shrunk significantly over the past 12 months.

I tried everything imaginable.
I tried Ebay. Failed! I couldn’t find anything with enough profit margin that would allow me to buy it and resell unless I forked out thousands of dollars and bought tons of items from South America. That wasn’t going to happen. I tried trading Forex . Failed! I had a couple of hundred bucks that I used to try and leverage into a couple of thousands of dollars per month. Let me give you a secret on money trading. If you don’t have a PhD in economics or a horse shoe up your rump then don’t do it. You have to be extremely lucky for a long period of time or actually understand what a drunken monkey is going to do. I tried doing some freelance design on Elance. Failed! Was constantly undercut by freelancers in India and China.

Finally, one day after much meditation a friend of mine told me about a way to make quick money online by promoting other people’s products through article writing. I didn’t really know how me writing an article would make any money but I was willing to give it a try . After looking at this system for a while I decided I had nothing to lose. Since it came with a money back guarantee I decided to go for it.

Well, have you ever had one of those moments in your life when you felt like you had figured out something that most people don’t know? That was me after the second week . I didn’t make a ton of money at first…..only $300-400 month, but then things starting doubling every month!!! I was feeling like I had just figured out life. How could I have not found this way of making money fast before? Regardless of how and when I found it, I’m just glad that I did. There aren’t words to describe how pumped up I am now to come home and look at my kids’ faces and know that we don’t have anything to worry about.

Top Tips For Writing A Professional CV

Friday, June 25th, 2010

A top quality CV is really, really important if you want to get that dream job (or just any job for that matter). I provide an online proof reading and editing service at cv proofreading and the number of CVs I’ve seen which haven’t been up to scratch is unbelievable. The CV is the first sales window between you and potential employers; whatever the role the employer needs to read your CV and put you onto that interview list. So what is it in a good CV that does just that?

1) A good organised structure makes you look professional and therefore like you’ve really taken some time and effort. My general favourite CV structure would include:

2) A good bold title of probably just your name, followed by your address, email, phone number and possibly date of birth – basically all the information needed to contact you. I usually centre all the text, and enlarge the text for the name, to give a professional appearance to your CV.

3) Next is your ‘Personal Information’ section – this is normally two, three or maybe four bullet points creating a summary of who you are and what you can offer the organisation. The first bullet might point will say – who you are (eg graduate, experienced barman) and the role you are applying for. If you apply separately it might be nice to include the company name here. The second bullet will briefly outline you skills and experience relative to the role. The third bullet point will be your general skills such as motivated or ambitious and will say how they help you become a valuable asset wherever you work. A fourth point might explain why you are leaving your current role for this one but isn’t really necessary. In this section you really need to sell yourself – keep it short but make yourself sound like the ideal candidate.

4) Next is the ‘Education History’ session; here you will have the dates to the left and the qualifications and place you studied to the right – the more recent and relative the education the more fleshed out you will be – don’t list all your GCSEs for example but maybe just Maths and English.

5) Now comes your ‘Work Experience’ section– again date on the left and a brief summary of where you worked and the role you undertook. Underneath this you might list the skills and experience you have developed which is relative to the new role.

6) Next you may include an ‘Interests’ section and/or and ‘Other Important Skills’ section – in bullet point form make yourself sound both qualified and interesting – if you’ve run a marathon or worked for a charity this shows your motivation and hard work – tell the employer this (keeping it concise of course).

7) Finally come your references – try to select the two most professional sounding references you can but ensure they have something nice to say about you. Again lay these out with phone number and address and keep the whole layout running consistently and professionally throughout.

I hope my tips have helped you out – if you do want further help my website cv advice offers a very useful editing service to get your CV as professional as possible.

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

I need a second job very badly! It needs to be either 2nd or 3rd shift, and a telecommuting position because I don’t have a vehicle. I know how to search for jobs online, but it’s so time consuming!

Does anyone know of a website I can go to that has a lot of 3rd or 2nd shift telecommuting job listings? Any field of expertise is fine. Thanks!

What can be considered as Itemized deductions? How much of it?

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

- Telecommuting 1 day week. Working from home and all the expenses associated with it (W2 Contract)?
Can partial rent, utilities be deducted?
- Commuting to work about 100 miles a day (both ways)
- Bought 2 new laptops + other software, used it sporadically to connect Work’s server to do some work, but not required by work.
- Spend few thousands of dollars on job searching + Interviews, job certifications, travel lodging expense — some of it however was used to extend the stay in a form of vacations…
- Moved about 50 miles from previous residence for work search.

Within the legal boundary scope, what can be considered as legally allowed deductions.

-no property, no business, no new car purchase, need couple more thousand dollars for itemized deductions to overtake standard deduction.
(W2 contract it is)
So Independent contract is better option (for itemized deduction for next year)?

assuming the difference in higher taxer can be negotiated with higher wage…

Car pooling with a member of the opposite sex: does it give the appearance of impropriety?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I commute 42 miles to & from work, each way, every weekday, so 84 mi./day total. Hearing that gas may hit .75/gallon this summer, I want to start car pooling. The manufacturing plant where I work is pretty isolated, and I can find only one person whose schedule fits mine and who lives close enough to my route to work to make it worthwhile.

My only concern is that I am a married man, and she is an attractive, single woman. She & I both work in professional positions, me as a software engineer, her as a product data coordinator. Telecommuting would save me around /month, but would people talk? My wife & I need to save money because she lost her job in January.

Also, if you were married, how would you feel about your spouse car pooling with an attractive member of the opposite sex, especially if you knew they were going to be in a car together for around an hour total every day? Would it worry you at all, or would you be comfortable with it?
Thanks everyone for all the incredibly interesting input! Although I have decided to go ahead and do it (gas went up AGAIN last night), I still appreciated hearing from people who said not to do it. I appreciated yours too,
elvlayarvvi, even though your wording was very strong — I did not give you a thumbs down!

We start Monday. Wish me luck!

PS to Pure Evil — That was so NOT an evil answer! An evil answer would have been, "Don’t even tell your wife you’re doing it. Just get this woman in the car with you and start working on the seduction!" See, you’re not evil!

Can You Help Me Find The Right Place To Live?

Monday, March 29th, 2010

I am a 25 year old who currently lives in Upstate NY. I have a B.A. in Writing and Literature, and I’m currently telecommuting as a freelance writer. I don’t make very much money–probably about 0 per month. I subsist on that, combined with some Ebay selling and working very part time with a family member’s gardening business (seasonal, of course.) I am looking to move someplace where there is more opportunity in my fields of interest–writing, gardening, and I am into selling antiques/clothes on Ebay/making jewelry. Do you know of a place I could move to that has opportunities in any of these departments? Also, I would like to live in a place that is less cold/snowy in the winter and has more sunny days. It doesn’t have to be 80 degrees and sunshine daily, just more than in Upstate NY. I love the outdoors and I don’t need a huge metropolis necessarily–just a place with nice people who are welcoming. I would like to pay a comparable amount in rent to what I pay now (max of 0 per month, or less would be great!) However, if I can get a good job, the cost of rent wouldn’t really matter. Thanks, guys! I really appreciate the input.

divorce experts? advice please?

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

my husband left 5 days ago. we are coming up on our 14 year anniversary. we have two kids. I was working thirty hours a week but he never came home this weekend and I missed work and was fired. He usually doesn’t keep a job. he is a great musician but does not make a living at it. I got him a job 2 weeks ago staining decks.. seasonal. It is about 0 a week. he says he’ll give us 0 or more a week for child support but if I file he will f-ck with me. He has only held a job 1/2 the time we have been together. but he could make decent money as a telecommuting web designer. Our fights are dysfunctional in several ways. but.. He always plays the victim and talks nasty about me to assert his will over the situation. He has only called once and asked to speak with the kids and they were busy taking a bath. that was two days ago and he hasn’t called since. he moved out to live the adolescent life. partying and playing music. starting a band. it is not a decent place for kids to stay. he may become successful in his new band. but has zero concern and or empathy for me and what he is putting me through. My wife instinct says stand by him and or try to make an arrangement with him. my mother instinct says get pissed file for child support tomorrow. Our rental is in his name, our bills are in his name and our vehicles are in his name. and his mother has always helped us financially. I was working till fired. I homeschool. and I am working on my 3rd year of college hoping to someday be a doctor. I am not certain what the best course of action is. Does anyone have advice for me after reading this?

What industries still need skilled workers who are not knowledge workers? Can you see a time when these jobs will be replaced by knowledge workers? Do you believe you would have any legal recourse if you didn’t prepare the list and were subsequently fired?

If I live outside of California but telecommute there, do I have to register as a sex offender in California?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

I am looking for a job in california, telecommuting from Washington. If I get one, do I have to register as a sex offender in california, or only in washington?
It’s very unfortunate that we live in a world full of assumptions. Nevertheless, because I actually want a helpful answers, I will explain a bit, which might stop the onslaught of comments against me.
When I was 13, I hosted a mIRC File Server (something like "bearshare" or "limewire" of sorts) basically, it allowed people to upload and download stuff, using my computer as a "hub" – This was unmoderated by me, but was my property, and thus I suffered the consequences when someone uploaded child pornography on it. I am 24 now, am married and have a son of my own.

Now please, stop commenting if you have nothing helpful to say.

What is the CHEAPEST Flat-Rate Land-Line Phone Service with Unlimited Local & Long-Distance Calls?

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

I recently got a 30 day free trial of MagicJack service & 2 MJ devices (but I’ll probably order more!)

I’m trying to lower the costs of land-line & cell phone service but still keep it for basic service & emergencies.

I’m in the process of applying for "telecommuting" call-center jobs, but as their systems don’t work with cell phones or VoIP, (which MagicJack technically is) & as MJ is not compatible with alarm systems, satellite etc.,& MJ recommends an emergency backup for 911, I’ll still need to keep the land-line phone.

But all the landline plans are minimum – monthly, as they all include features like call waiting, caller ID, etc. which the jobs I need it for, don’t even allow.

As I’ll be using MJ for all non-work calls, I just need the CHEAPEST basic service with a flat rate unlimited local & long-distance calls (for work). No frills or fancies.

I’m in metro-Detroit. Anyone know the CHEAPEST land-line plans for or under – just for work & emergencies??

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

What can we do to combat this? Why are we driving 40-90 minutes each way for the job. is it cause we cant afford to live in the communities that have the jobs? many even most homes are wired for broadband now. are we finally ready as a society to fight for telecommuting as more standard job options? First they started putting jobs far out in suburbs, then brought them back to city but bby then the home prices were out of reach to many families. i dont want to live in podunk, usa just to be near a decent job. and i dont want to pay 00 a month rent to live in the city either. what gives?

Self employed and made CAD 3000. Do I need to file taxes?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

I live and work in the US. Beside my day job, I work on a small contract (self-employed) for someone in Canada (telecommuting) and made about CAD 3000 for the whole year 2007. Do I need to file Canadian taxes for that?

Thank you.

telecommute, then outsource the job ?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

There are a large number of telecommuting positions here in USA. I was thinking of getting a job telecommuting, something very basic, then outsource the tasks of the job to someone, most likely in India. I currently have a job and simply could do this in addition. I could take 30 mins a day in relaying tasks to my person in India and sending the work back to the employer.

If I get fired, no big deal, the outsource would be a hourly pay and I still have my real job that I work hard at.

Would this work? what issues might i get into?
I would be using websites such as Elance, hireanindian, etc. All of these people are usually very good at English and I have outsourced project with these sites in the past with ease. no need to go to india
