Is a US company allowed to employ a foreigner telecommuting from abroad? E.g. a Frenchman living in Ecuador? Without a greencard/visa/work permit, since he does not live in the US?

If no: Which is the law which interdicts it?

If yes: Under which circumstances? Does he have to open his own company?

How about taxes and customs duty? I think he does not have to pay US taxes if he spends less than 122 days per year in the US (see Wikipedia on "tax exile"). How can the US company handle this?

Which employment laws do apply? I have found this: http://www.gentrylocke.com/showarticle.aspx?Show=242
Hi virus, thank you for the answer. So if it is a multinational company with a branch in the foreign country, it is of course no problem. The branch adheres to local laws and pays local taxes. What if there is no local branch?

I have two things on my mind- one is that I would like to start telecommuting one day a week. About half the people in the department do so for a variety of reasons- so I’m not ground-breaking here. However, I would also like to bring up what the potential is for me to be promoted soon- I have been here 2 yrs and feel as if I am deserving and due.
While I don’t believe telecommuting should impede the promotion in any way- I am aware that a working mom such as myself asking to telecommute might be looked upon as not being as career driven as someone not in that situation.
If I ask to telecommute first, I’m afraid that would be a point against me when I ask for the promotion. But if I ask for the promotion first, then will he feel ambushed since he has no real basis for denying the telecommuting request, but would rather not promote someone who wants to work from home one day a week?

I do taxes for a living, but this is just seasonal income. I have been looking for a full-time position, but with the job market the way it is…. I would really like to get going on telecommuting. Maybe do even more than one. Any leads to websites that could help. No scams or money up front please.

It sounds as though many lifestyle options that are becoming popular – telecommuting, homeschooling, and other options – lead to families spending more time together. Some have theorized that the industrial revolution, and the public schooling that came later, have caused problems for families. Once industry was taken out of the home and into factories, families were split up during the day. After that, children began to be sent to schools rather than learning at home. (There were always a few schools available to the very rich, but the majority of kids have always learned at home.)

What do these changes mean for families? Do you think that the number of people working from the home will continue to grow? How about the number of homeschoolers? Will our families be stronger because of this, or we will be more divided within society?

My boyfriend and I have been together one and a half years and living together for about 9 months now. We have a great relationship, we’re both happy, or at least I was happy, but things are changing. After all this time, my boyfriend isn’t sure about me, even though I love him very much and have given him no reason to doubt me.

I understand not being ready (to get married), but why would you stay with someone you don’t see yourself marrying someday. We have talked about this and his solution is: I leave him or I wait until someday (which may never come), just so he can be sure (being sure does not include a ring).

Now, you have to understand that being not ready, doesn’t bother me, but after a year and a half and you’re not sure, that’s not okay with me. I have read, researched, and ambushed my friends, family, and co-workers about this (I ask them, "How long were you with your wife/husband, before you knew she/he was the one). The reply is always the same, (except my parents who both gave the same answer, "About a month") "With in the first year." Of course, they weren’t ready for marriage (or at least a couple weren’t) but they were sure.

Here is some background information, about how I got into this situation: I was unhappy and my parents were moving to Montana, so I came too. I met my current boyfriend here and decided to stay. We are staying here for his career (he doesn’t want to have to start over), until he gets a little more experience (another year and a half). I am from California and my career was going well enough, that my earning potential was hitting near ,000. Unfortunately, there are no jobs in my field here, so I had to take a pay cut, about ,000 a year. The worst part is, I don’t want to live here, there is little culture or mix of food choices (I’m used to San Francisco).

Now, I work a job I don’t really like. I live about an hour away from my job and during the season, my hours go from 80 hours every two weeks, to about 130 hours every two weeks (I work every day and my days off are one at a time, few and far between). I have been trying to get telecommuting work (freelance), so I can have a nice normal job, Monday through Friday, 9 to 5, and I wouldn’t have to drive to work. Before it was no problem (getting freelance work), my resume spoke for itself, and I always got calls for the jobs I applied for. But now everything has changed! I have been out of my field for almost two years now and I can’t even get an unpaid internship, believe me I have tried.

That’s not all though, I’m even spending more money by living with him. My employer has employee housing, which I moved out of, to move in with him. It only costs about 0 a month, which includes internet, cable, and utilities. I now pay for half of rent, food, and utilities (we don’t have cable or internet) which is about 0 a month. I also fill up my gas tank every three days, which is about a week or 0 a month. When I lived at work, I never had to fill up my gas take. So, by living with him, I am spending 0 a month. I also get 50% off food, at work, so my food bill has gone up too.

I have about ,000 in school debt, which I am trying to pay off, ,000 down and counting, so by not living with him, I could be paying off my debt a lot faster.

But, my biggest problem is, that I love my boyfriend or this would be an easy decision. We love each other, our relationship is great, and we really communicate well… not to mention he is the only guy I have been with… who I click with intellectually, emotionally, and ***SEXUALLY***

I am 26, so I only have 4 years left before I turn 30 (I hear your 20’s are your best years to date and find a quality mate) and nine years to have healthy babies, without a huge risk (I’d like to have between 2 and 4 kids).

My career is going down the tubes, so my boyfriend’s career can flourish, I work way more than I ever expected, at a job I don’t like, I dislike where I live (which makes me unhappy), and I am sacrificing so much (he isn’t sacrificing anything, but personal space and alone time. He also spends less money with me living with him) all for a man who is unsure.

I know that this will be a personal choice, but I really need your advice.

I am interested in instructional design, teaching, tutoring, data entry, proofreading, etc.

I want to work for a company that cannot hire people from my state. However, my good friend lives in another state where they can hire. The job is telecommuting. I wouldn’t mind if my checks were sent to her house. What would the tax implications be for me, if I did this? For her? And is it legal? Is there any way to do it legally if not? Thanks :)
Just to add details I should have before: this is telecommuting work, freelance work, so it is not unusual for me to have about 10 employers a year. I file 1099s, not W2s. I just don’t want to do anything I can get in trouble for….thanks :)

I have been a stay at home mom since my baby was born (he is now 16 months old). I have a chance to return back to work, 10-20 hours a week telecommuting from home and ocassional meetings where I have to go to the office. Living on just my husband’s income is tight but do-able as long as we budget. My question is this: should I continue to be stay at home mom til my son is in preschool or should I work part time? My concern with my working part time at my old office is that I may easily get sucked into working after hours (I am a litigator and it’s difficult to turn your back if you are on the case and a rush comes in). I’d especially like to hear from moms who have tried both part time jobs and stay at home and their insight re what they liked better. Does returning to work part time impede or improve quality of time with your child and what other impact, if any, has it had on your, your husband’s and your child’s life? Thanks in advance!

I have some work I really need to get done and I have trouble with the daily distractions of life. I want to go away somewhere for 2-4 weeks so I can focus. The perfect place would be somewhere kind of isolated and very green, maybe an ecolodge. I’d want there to be good food readily available. I also need a desk and a fast and reliable internet connection. It’d be nice if it wasn’t hideously expensive, but I’m prepared to shell out whatever is necessary. I live outside Washington, DC. I like the idea of this place being within driving distance. But I could also get excited about somewhere I had to fly to if I was sure it would provide everything I need.

Can anyone recommend someplace that fits this description?

So I’ve been searching, for what feels like forever and a day lol, And I yet to find a legit site! What I don’t want is: Transcription, Surveys Sites, Telecommuting, or call centers. Are there any other work at home opportunities that pay very well, where you don’t have to pay for anything, no start up kits, no nothing?

I had been paid for my 300.00 travel time every check for the past 15 years. I started telecommuting a couple months ago, but this week they didn’t pay me that extra 300.00. Do they have to give me warning? I am in TX and there is no written agreement about this.

- bus routes can be changed; rail is one place to stay
- the same passenger capacity from one terminal can be staggered over more convenient departure times with busses
- busses can traverse existing roads w/o requiring eminent domain takings
- both rail and busses can be fitted with low-emission propulsion
- busses are more likely to give you a direct route w/o switching vehicles

And it would seem busses are cheaper.

Seems like rail is better at taking semi-trailers off the road between ports and major intermodal terminals.

Seems like telecommuting is more "progressive" than grandiose, dare I say obsolete intra-city passenger rail.

And of course, we always come back to this: why would anyone not using busses suddenly, magically start using a new billion dollar light rail line that only goes between points A & B?

So what am I missing about rail except the GLAMOUR factor that fires the hearts of city/county councils everywhere in their bid to keep up with the Joneses?
Rango: are you saying elitists only ride trains and poor people ride busses? Snobs won’t use transit unless we build them glamorous rail lines? There is a caste system and social warfare in transit?

Have you seen a subway in NYC, incidentally? They seem to be populated by all the "classes".

Moreover, if transit is supposed to ease congestion, then it would seem rail would work against that. If everyone is driving to the terminal at the same time go catch the trains which would seem to only depart at fewer times than could multiple busses, then don’t you still have more car traffic going to the terminal than if people could select from more staggered departure times of the smaller but more numerous busses?

I am. I just wanted to see what my fellow SF Bay Area commuters are doing to offset their misery. Did you turn to biking? BART? Telecommuting? It’s just getting ridiculous. Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks.

My husband and I are moving to Portland area from San Francisco in January. We are planning on renting a apartment or a house instead of buying right away. We would like to live out in the burbs because we have done city living and suburb living and we are definitely suburb people. My husband wont have to commute because he will be telecommuting. What neighborhoods/suburbs are good for families(we have a 1 yr old and I’m 3 months pregnant) and have good rental properties?

Thanks everyone!

Been in a position that did not require much face-to-face interaction, telecommuting for a year, and am now moving into a 9-5 close-knit office environment. Looking for advice on how to mentally prepare for such a dramatic change.

Does anyone know of any companies in or near San Francisco that offer telecommuting positions? Or does anyone know of any legitimate work at home jobs? Preferably part-time. Right now I’m a junior at SF State and I’m always stuck at school, so a job where I can work from my computer would be awesome. Any help or advice would be great! Thanks!
Preferably a job, but i wouldn’t mind my own business. But that sounds hard to start up. I’m motivated to do either. I just want to make some money and have the job flexible around my school schedule.

Does any know of online work that I can do that does not involve completing offers or trials that ask for my address or other personal information? I do not want to get a bunch of junk mail or have my address floating around. Any real employers looking to hire telecommuting employees?
Actually, there are jobs online that pay. I write articles for associatedcontent.com and I do get paid. I am not a big writer so that is why I am looking for other jobs. Also, I know that employers hire customer service agents, but I don’t have a home phone so I can’t do that.

Considering the internet and telecommuting in addition to traditional, physical (actual) location work, what might be something I could move out away from the city to do (am no longer able to do strenuous, physical work)?

Thanks in advance – g.

This is to apply for a second job, part time, where the entire hiring process is conducted online and via telephone, (the work involves telecommuting). The cover letter is giving me the most trouble, in most cases I don’t even know the name of the person doing the hiring until they contact me in response to my resume, who do I address it to? What can I do to make my personality evident, to make it original, and yet still be professional?
