EDGARTOWN, Mass. (AP) – It’s Sunday and President Barack Obama is on vacation, so that means it’s time for another round of golf on Martha’s Vineyard.
His motorcade got an early start for the Vineyard Golf Club for his second visit there during his summer break.
Before the "Hate Bush" crowd begins whining about "Bush took more", they are well reminded that

I lost my job almost a year ago due to the company I was working for having problems in the recession – everyone in the company slowly lost their jobs. This was my first job out of university and was working from home.
I have two degrees one in computing the other in business. I have also run two businesses after university before getting the job.
I moved countries to be with my girlfriend after university – we have been together 5 years. I need a remote telecommuting job to work from home from my location. Local jobs are difficult as I don’t speak the language well no one will hire me – even in coffee shops etc.
I have now applied now for a total of over 2500 jobs, maybe even 3000. Burned through thousands in savings. Spend about 12 hours a day working on poorly paid contracts and searching online for this illusive job.
I am now in business partnership with the ceo of that I used to work for although the business is stagnant and has made no money for me so far.
I am lost with what to do. I feel so frustrated, that no one wants me and am beginning to take out my frustrations on others. When someone applies rejecting me and telling me I am not needed it feels better than no reply at all.
What the hell can I do?

Here’s my issue. I’ve been with this company for a few years, love it. We have an intern working here currently, and they are going back to school in a month. A manager is allowing the intern to work from another state, from home for a few months. I think this is completely unfair – they are giving some intern that doesn’t necessarily know what they are doing (on federal contracts, mind you) work remotely, however none of us in the office, who have been here for many years, are given this option of telecommuting. The intern has already said he wants to stay on just for the money.
What should I do? Should I leave the manager a message saying its unfair, and either the intern shouldnt be allowed to, or the remaining staff should have the option?
Thanks!
I’m not whining, I just don’t think that the manager (she is new) thought about the repercussions of her decision. If one employee is allowed to work from home (with no reason such as disabled), then it should be an option for the rest doing the exact same job.

I am currently a stay home mom and I am really looking for a telecommuting job that pays off. I have browsed and reviewed many websites that seem to provide promising job offers but unfortunately I don’t get any feedback when I apply for them. In other cases, I have come across some that I assume are scams. I honestly don’t want to fall prey to any of these fraudulent companies, so if you know any of these, please let me know too. Can anyone recommend a reliable company that will indeed pay your working hours?

Last year, I moved from State A to State B. While I lived in State B, I worked as an independent contractor for a website. I didn’t make enough from this job to get a 1099, but I do get that I’m still responsible to report it as additional income… that’s not the issue.
My question is mostly about my state tax returns. Now I didn’t start this contracting work until I moved to State B, so I’m assuming that this income only counts toward my return for State B, as far as my state tax returns go. However, the company is not based out of State B. Does that create any logistical conflicts I should be aware of?
Also, this was my only income earned while in State B, which means I don’t have a W-2 for my State B return. Should I, then, report this as "additional income", even though it was my only income earned in State B?

I am looking for suggestions on how to go about looking for a job given my very unique and limited situation. I have a serious disability and about the only possible way for me to work is by telecommuting, and it needs to be essentially a completely computer-based job not requiring any significantly physical tasks. I don’t intend to brag, but I’m a fairly smart guy. I have a bachelors degree and am in the middle of a masters degree program, although it is in the liberal arts. I have a number of computer skills and I have good writing abilities. I really don’t care what kind of work I do or how much it pays. I could care less if it was minimum-wage. I’m just trying to figure out a way to get someones attention and let them know that I am eager to work for just about anything. Any suggestions on how I should start my search?
I should have indicated to begin with that I am not at all interested in call center jobs. I want to know if there are any other telecommuting jobs besides those.

I am a student learning English.
I wrote something off the top of my head to practice English.
Would you check to see if there are any odd expressions?
Q: What do you think about more people choose to telecommute or work from home?
A: For the aspect of saving the office rental fee and commuting fee(the money workers spend commuting) it sounds good.
A lot of people might get more chances to work thanks to such a technology if they cannot leave their home with some reasons.
However, I personally prefer to go to the workplace and meet people in person. It might be okay two or three times a week to work from home. Yet if I have to work only at home without going to work and meeting people, I don’t want it.
Communicating with people in person is the pleasant part of the work. It could be the stress, and a lot of people say that they have problems with coworkers. However, I believe we can improve our social skill through such a process even though it’s stressful.
Plus, home must be the place to take a rest. However, some workers from home point out that they cannot divide their work from their home, so they feel more stressed because their home is almost like the workplace.

I’m faced with a dilemma. I used to believe that the person who works the hardest has the best work ethic. That is, untill I got a job of my own. There is this girl working at my place who’s been there 4 years, works really hard, does stuff that’s not even on the list of her duties, goes above and beyond and still only makes $.50 more an hour than me. Now, I think she’s just stupid and letting the corporation use her. When I look at her I feel sorry for her, but can’t tell her why.
I do my fair share, but do not go beyond that, unless I know it will benefit me in the long run (ex. working full time guarantees that I can pursue continuous education for which the company pays, otherwise, I would have stayed home and did a lot of the work part time, telecommuting).
Now, wich one of us has the right idea of good work ethic? Or, perhaps neither? Why?

I am currently telecommuting for a company in Spokane Washington. This company has an office in Mountlake Terrace Washington. I am getting married and moving to Bremerton Washington. Prior to making the decision to move I reviewed the written telecommuting policy and it states that the alternate work site must be within 50 miles of a campus. Bremerton falls within that limit, however the company is now stating there is a 50 minute travel limit for site visits. Neither myself or my team lead have been able to find this documented any where. Do I have any recourse? Can they enforce a policy different than the written version.

I work in a typical office type job. I have an interview with a similar company doing the same job only telecommuting from home. Even though technology would allow me to work at home, my current company has outlawed telecommuting. They fear employees will just use the time to take care of kids and slack off. I believe the time and expense of commuting to work everyday plus the flexibility to “around” my family is better than a raise. However, I don’t think this is appropriate answer to this question, especially if their fear is the same as my current employer. Anyone else had to answer this question?

to conserve by increasing employee telecommuting.? Isn’t it a scandal that this Pres can’t bring himself to do the right thing and put OPEC on notice. If Carter were President he would be on it immediately rather than coast to the end of their term. I guess invading Iran or Venezuela makes better sense?
BTW, it would also lower CO2 emissions and begin working to reverse GW. Lower particulate pollution too. I guess it only makes sense to little naive me and none to all the politicians who need campaign contributions from the fat and happy oil industry.
"Carter fixing something, your insane."
No,
Apparently you don’t know the historical facts about Carter & OPEC & the oil industry as well as I do. The Carter comment was fact & not a political statement. Did you know it was Nixon who put in Price Controls and tacked on import fees on crude oil imports to reduce them in respone to the rise in oil prices from 2.50 to 11.00USD for a barrel of Arab Light@ 1974. Learn something worth knowing. These prices R not justified & will not stand if we do what really needs to be done which is stop wasting oil for fuel purposes & cut our personal consumption by changing our mindset & our behaviors.Everytime I see 1 person commuting to work alone in their car, often in a non-working pickup truck or an SUV, I know we R all behaving like spoiled brats who stupidly waste & pollute. My Q tries to address the issue in a more constuctive way. I hope the gas-guzzling public wakes up to the reality of the situation. We R headed into big trouble if we don’t
OPEC, not CARTER was responsible for the gas lines. Get you facts Straight. The measures Carter and the Congress to reduce imports from OPEC through efficiency improvements in housing insulation improvements and car efficiency improvements(CAFE standards) helped postpone what is happening now. I’m sick of misinformed political jerks taking to the internet justifying their views by distorting reality and past history. My Q was asked in a positive way, but you folks some of you oil investors or oil company employees have really pissed me off.
The corporations love tax credits to do what needs to be done telecommuting using broadband is a realistic suggestion thay won’t take 10 yrs to make a difference. And who said I hate corporations; you demagogues have –not me.
"I’m not sure how much telecommuting would save us in oil." Huh? If you don’t have to drive to work every day to do your job you don’t burn up 3to4 dollars per gallon of gasoline. Just up Where have you put your brain man?
"What the government should do is force the automakers to get better gas mileage out of their vehicles" Yes but this President like some here prefer the other solutions that don’t inconvenience them. Better we go to war and use our military to keep the oil flowing. Yeah, right?
BTW the real cost of the oil we cosume is much greater tha 100USD per 43 gallon barrel whe you factor in all the diseconomies like war, high prices for anything dependent on energy as a factor. Have you looked at your electric bills lately? At your Heating Oil Bill? Why are the quantities in a food package smaller while the price stays the same? The cost of energy affects everything and the producers will have to pass through their rising costs in some way. So far many have taken the silent approach but some tack on a fuel surcharge like it were a kind of tax.
not 43 but 42 gallons per bbl. Sorry for the typos but I’m using an onscreen keyboard and a mouse to spell.
DJ, why don’t you stop breathing rather than make assinine suggestions?
Is this about Conservation? One would not know it from the A’s to my Q!
"If you want to cut demand you raise the prices." Usually I agree when there is free and fair trade because, as you know, classic economic theory says price will balance supply and demand. But energy is like air and water, basic and like salt demand highly inelastic( I learned macroecon under Paul Samuelson ) The problem is that there are real inequities here in the trade and pricing & resource distribution hurting people worldwide less fortunate than many of us posting here. We have a right to turn to our gov’t when the economic system breaksdown in certain situations like now, like right now! OPEC is a violation of Capitalism & our Anti-trust laws, & the oilco’s are their well paid lackeys screwing everyone. Why you folks can’t or refuse to see the truths I speak is incredible & frustrating. It can only be based on some benefit for those who have politicized this Q as I1st posed it. I know people R paid to go on the net to distort the picture & the mainstream Press has abandoned us !
Info Pt! For CAFE history, see http://www.davidbarber.org/research/cafe.html
"In 1974, the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) program was introduced. Beginning in the 1975 model year, automobile makers in the United States would be required to meet average requirements for fuel efficiency on many of their vehicles. At the time of its introduction, and in fact ever since, these standards, and other related policy items, have been a point of contention between automakers, environmentalists, and policy makers. This paper will attempt to shed some light on the strengths and weaknesses of CAFE regulation. We will begin with an introduction to the history of the CAFE program. Following this will be a discussion of the goals of CAFE, followed by an evaluation of how well those goals have been achieved. Next, we will look at the economic efficiency of the program (based on the principles of economic efficiency defined by Tietenberg and others, who take into account externalities)[1], …
Info Pt #2 Re Carter
"During Carter’s presidency the United States suffered serious fuel shortages and struggled through several major crises including the invasion of the American Embassy in Tehran, the subsequent holding of embassy personnel as hostages by Islamic Radicals, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
His administration also created two cabinet-level departments: the Department of Energy and the Department of Education. He established a national energy policy,[1] removed price controls from domestic petroleum production,[2] but was unable to make America less reliant on foreign oil sources."
see entry at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Carter
"Do you have a solar hot water heater and wind generator or maybe solar eclectic roof panels?" Do you have the right Q? Bec it seems your Q( a no-no in this format) is an answer to someone else’s Q. BTW I don’t have "X" and if I did or didn’t have X whats your point? It Seems to me your point is irrelevant and ad hominem whoever you were babbling at.
For Christ’s sake, Answer the Q and stop bashing me and carping the Q or delete or edit your A to address the pt of the Q w/o the ideological BS.
"Bush and Corporations caused: 911, Katrina, Bridges to fall," I don’t believe nothing like that. ?He is an incompetent and dangerous President and he should be impeached. I don’t know him personally so I hate the fact he is my President elected by very dumb voters who won’t admit they made a mistake. I personally don’t hate the person, he seems to be a likeable person, but he should not be President. To smear me id ad hominem fashion only discredits your diatribe, Bushie that you are.
Yes I am a liberal in the tradition of those who drew up the Costitution that emphasized following the law and governing by democratic principles and distributed powers to keep a nutjob dictator from representing us and misusing the powers that comes from us the people. Got that!

I am looking for a career working with computers and that would help me get a telecommuting position and also make more money than I am currently as a teacher, but i know I may have to return to school. Which career is the best bet in IT? Here are the choices: Information Systems Security, Data Communication Systems Technology, Software Engineering Technology, IT Computer Network Systems, IT – Software Applications & Programming, IT – Web Development. If there is something not on this list you’d like to suggest, feel free to add it and describe it. Thanks for your serious and helpful replies.

Telecommuters enjoy working at home because it gives them more control over their schedules while removing the distractions that are part of the workplace. Realizing that they are no longer under the watch of a supervisor, however, some workers abuse their telecommunicating privileges. What are the risks to business of allowing employees to telecommute? At what point is an employee abusing the freedom afforded by telecommuting? In your view, what kinds of activities or behaviors constitute such abuse?

I love to play old games that were designed for now ancient versions of Windows / DOS such as Civilization and Railroad Tycoon.
Over the years with various upgrades to more contemporary versions of Windows, I have bought some of the newer versions of the games that are for latest Windows, but not enjoyed them nearly as much as the originals, but over time they less and less good fit to newer computers.
The color contrast and brightness have gone into toilet, compared to what I enjoyed years ago, so that it is like I am playing the games on a mainly dark monitor that works fine in other applications, so the problem is not with the computer hardware.
I have changed a few Windows settings, then changed them back. I do not want to have to change settings every time I reboot my PC to have different settings optimized for different applications. I not want to mess up other applications such as e-mail, Internet, Telecommuting.
I am currently Windows 98.

I’ve been working for the company for many years, am highly regarded and valuable. I’ve shown the ability to work independently from my home and remote work sites many times in the past.
I’m worried my boss may feel betrayed for some reason if I inquire about telecommuting from another city (long story, only temporary though for like 6 months). I would assure him that I would drop the idea if he doesn’t like it, but I wouldn’t want it to hurt our working relationship going forward, so I’m apprehensive in asking.

I’m going back to school and I’m going to take it seriously this time. The only problem is that I don’t know what career path to take. My only interests are in things that either wouldn’t make enough money or wouldn’t provide the lifestyle I’m looking to have so I’m not looking to find my passion or any nonsense like that; I need to go in with a plan of some sort. Here’s what I’m looking for: don’t need a ton of money, in fact 50 grand after tax would be just fine. I cannot be geographically confined; I need to be able to live anywhere I want, leave anytime I want so telecommuting/tele-freelance opportunities are a must and have to be common in the suggested field. I do not mind hard work I would be willing to commit to a program for a decade if I can count on the results I have described. Any advice or suggestions?

When was the last time you abandoned the clock, and did things as you felt compelled to do? ie, sleep when ever you are tired, wake when ever you are not, eat when ever you are hungry, etc.?
A friend pointed out to me that despite the invent of electricity, and telecommuting, and flexible hours, etc., we still tend to live our lives by the sun clock. ie, we get up in the morning even if we are exhausted, and eat at the same times every day, and plan toilet breaks around when we can get to one, instead of when we feel the need. We go to sleep early because we "have" to get up early, or late because there is "no time" to get everything done in time, otherwise… So I’m wondering how many of you go by the rules that say you must rise and work early in the day, and must go to sleep at night, and why?

Hi mommas – I want to run something by you. I am 32.5 weeks pregnant with my first baby – I work full time, as does my husband, at the same place (but different depts.). Another girl in my dept. had her 1st baby last April and asked for, and was given, 2 days telecommuting upon return from maternity leave. I talked about my return with the same supervisor, who said I could have 1 telecommuting day upon my return. I was really disappointed with this (was hoping for two days), but can kind of understand that I have a different duties than this other girl and that upper management doesn’t look highly upon telecommuting to begin with.
But then I found out today that my husband talked with his supervisor about a couple choices, like working 4 10-hour days or working on a Saturday (and thus having one day off during the week), and while his boss was amenable to either, upper management again came down on both suggestions and did not approve either.
So now I’m looking at the likelihood of my working from home one day of the week, and putting the baby in daycare for 4 days of the week while my husband and I both work. I’m freaking out about this, both emotionally and financially. We both work at a higher institution and while everyone initially talked about being flexible and family-friendly, I do not feel that is actually the case. I’m really pissed about this, too – one colleague gets to telecommute twice/week, but I only get 1 day? And my husband gets none?
Anyway. What I’m wondering is, for those of you who put your baby in daycare (after a 3 month maternity leave), what was that like for you? Was it no big deal – i.e., am I overreacting to the thought – or is it a terrible idea?
Thanks for listening and responding nicely.

I have been seeing this girl for almost two years now, and I love her very much. The problem is that I am a student. We used to live closer, but I moved away for college. We talk on the phone every night, and she visits occasionally, but I am very busy. I currently work around 40 hours a week. I spend a bit of time with my family and a little bit with my friends. I am taking two 3 unit classes. When I get home I hardly have time to get work done. I have been trying to get her to move here so I can spend time with her, but right now our only means is telecommuting. When I call her she gets angry that I am tired.
I know she is trying to move here, but i get this feeling that it is not going to be for a very long while. I have promised this girl the world, but I seem unable to accomplish it. I would love to be able to support her but i need to get through college.I can’t seem to,due to the fact that I can’t find enough time to do homework. If I switch the two she gets lonely and worried

I took six weeks of FMLA to stay at home to take care of a sick family member.
During the entire time that I was at home caring for my sick family member, I was still technically "able and available" to work, so long as the work was done from home (e.g. telecommuting).
My employer gave me a deadline to come back to work, and said that they would consider me as having quit if I did not return by that date. Unfortunately I was not able to meet that deadline because my family member was still sick.
However, I was ready to come back a few weeks later, when the health issue was resolved. I have since contacted my former employer to delcare my availability for work, but they do not have any new positions available, and cannot re-hire me at my former one.
My employer has not contested my claim for unemployment insurance.

My hubby’s employer is cutting costs, and has asked him to work from home full time, starting very soon. We had planned on me being a stay at home mom when we have kids, but now with him working at home, I was wondering if me working part time during the day might work, since he will be home. Is it really possible to provide infant care, while telecommuting, or will it impact the quality of work too much? What about when the child is a bit older? At what age would this be appropriate?

Mine allows 1 work at home day per week (which might explain why I’m up so late – don’t have to go in tomorrow).

I’m having a little trouble with deciding where to get my tattoo. It’ll be my first – a purple Daylily. (purple= mourning and daylily because they only live for a day – in honor of my son who passed the day he was born.) I’m your average 30 year old, slighly overweight midwesterner. I am a professional – but in a very casual work environment (soon to be telecommuting from home). I’m thinking I want this tattoo behind my neck, the top of my foot, on the inside of my wrist, etc. Any suggestions?
I have a 16 inch scar from having cancer, at least a flower isn’t disfiguring.

One good fix towards reducing our economic problems would be to have all of our
representatives and senators work from their home state, have them work out of
their offices so that they can be with the people, every day. There is no reason
with the technology that telecommuting can not be used, we need to keep these
people close and not sequestered in D.C.
Perhaps that law should be changed. I’m sure safeguards could be put in place to prevent hacking
