Pros and cons of being an insurance agent?

I’m a college graduate with very little experience. I was thinking about getting into the insurance industry. If anybody has an knowledge about this field can you tell me the pros and cons of the job? Where can I find out about all these certifications? Can you telecommute? If you do work in the industry, do you like your job?

The most important thing for you to decide is whether you are really interested in this field. Secondly an agents job is selling and marketing- hence it would be a matter of time before you make contacts and build relations before you sell anything- not a quick buck thing.
Initially the agents have to work with brokers and so the commission rate or the pay is very low. The commission increases as per your selling.

The pros are that if you have built relations than the business will be renewed with you for General Insurance – Property and for Life insurance and Mutual funds you get commissions in future also for the services given.

Personally, I am an Underwriter in Insurances for over 2 decades and have worked in this field in 3 continents – and Love it.
Please check out the web-site for the particular province/state you are in to see the requirement for the licenses. Had you mentioned the place it would have been easier to give you the exact web-site.

    Best of Luck

With no experience, you can’t get a paying job and telecommute.

Most agents are straight commission sales – you don’t sell, you don’t get paid.

Most new commission agents, like 95%, wash out.

A non commission job, with no experience, even with a license, you’re not going to make much money starting out. When I hire untrained unlicensed people, I start out just slightly over minimum wage.

You should probably check out your state insurance department website, under agent licensing.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE insurance. I’m definately in the minority – most agents I’ve met hate it.

I’ve done commercial for 6 years and have found it to be very fascinating if you like business. I would never do personal lines…people are idiots.

Cons: you can’t talk about your job to anyone outside of insurance. Anyone! It’s the magic word to make people stop listening
