I need a simple business license. I do freelance design work (Computer assisted fashion design) online in Ga. My boss from my previous job of doing the same kind of work suggested I get a simple business license.
What is the difference between a simple business license and making quarterly tax payments? How do I go about getting either? Where do I go? Is there a specific office I dhould look for in my county? When would I submit quarterly tax payments?

I currently have Windows XP Media Edition Service Pack 2 (this came loaded on the computer when I bought it). But I now I have to buy either XP Professional or Home Edition for my job (I will be telecommuting now). So should I buy the home edition with or without the service pack ? Will I have to delete the current OS completely and then add this on ???
My job stated their system isn’t compatible with Media Center, that’s why I have to buy this software. XP Pro is too pricey, should I get XP Home OEM version or XP Home w/ Service Pack 2 ???

I telecommute to my job part of the time and my employer is using Microsoft Office 2003. My laptop has a copy of Office 2000 and I am having occasional compatibility and conversion problems with some files. I have used Office 2007 a few times and pretty much HATE it like everyone else. I would like to purchase a legitimate copy of Office 2003 but can’t find a way to do it. Any ideas?

I work in a small office of 6 people, one of which was someone I considered a good friend. She and I both have only been with this company 3 months, but have known each other for almost 7 years. Last month I was going to leave this company and take another job. My reasons were I wanted a position which offered some scheduling flexibility to deal with aging parent issues, and also one with a shorter commute. I put my notice in, but once I told my manager what was driving my decision the next day he told me I could telecommute once or twice a week until I can get the situation with my Mom worked out. Unfortunately, my "friend" was upset about this arrangement that was only offered to me and not to her or the other person on our team and has not been talking to me, and to make matters worse has been spreading lies or gossip about me around the office. I’ve tried to talk to her, or email her but she says she doesn’t have time for my drama, and work is work. Can this mess be fixed?

I’m looking for freelance computer graphic design work. This was my assumption:

I would find employers online who need work to be done and then send them my samples. I know I will be competing against other workers who submit their work as well. Once the deadline is over, the employers will choose the samples they like best and pay whomever it was who created those designs.

I went browsing online and discovered that people have to bid in order to be eligible to do the work. Why are people required to pay before they can get the job? Is there any kind of computer graphic design work that falls under my assumption?

No matter what the job is, there will always be downs to it and I’ll be stuck working 50 hours a week working for money I won’t have enough time to enjoy. I’d rather have a web-based income, own a business, or even be a drifter working landscaping jobs. Is there honestly a job that isn’t miserable.

My boyfriend and I have been together one and a half years and living together for about 9 months now. We have a great relationship, we’re both happy, or at least I was happy, but things are changing. After all this time, my boyfriend isn’t sure about me, even though I love him very much and have given him no reason to doubt me.

I understand not being ready (to get married), but why would you stay with someone you don’t see yourself marrying someday. We have talked about this and his solution is: I leave him or I wait until someday (which may never come), just so he can be sure (being sure does not include a ring).

Now, you have to understand that being not ready, doesn’t bother me, but after a year and a half and you’re not sure, that’s not okay with me. I have read, researched, and ambushed my friends, family, and co-workers about this (I ask them, "How long were you with your wife/husband, before you knew she/he was the one). The reply is always the same, (except my parents who both gave the same answer, "About a month") "With in the first year." Of course, they weren’t ready for marriage (or at least a couple weren’t) but they were sure.

Here is some background information, about how I got into this situation: I was unhappy and my parents were moving to Montana, so I came too. I met my current boyfriend here and decided to stay. We are staying here for his career (he doesn’t want to have to start over), until he gets a little more experience (another year and a half). I am from California and my career was going well enough, that my earning potential was hitting near ,000. Unfortunately, there are no jobs in my field here, so I had to take a pay cut, about ,000 a year. The worst part is, I don’t want to live here, there is little culture or mix of food choices (I’m used to San Francisco).

Now, I work a job I don’t really like. I live about an hour away from my job and during the season, my hours go from 80 hours every two weeks, to about 130 hours every two weeks (I work every day and my days off are one at a time, few and far between). I have been trying to get telecommuting work (freelance), so I can have a nice normal job, Monday through Friday, 9 to 5, and I wouldn’t have to drive to work. Before it was no problem (getting freelance work), my resume spoke for itself, and I always got calls for the jobs I applied for. But now everything has changed! I have been out of my field for almost two years now and I can’t even get an unpaid internship, believe me I have tried.

That’s not all though, I’m even spending more money by living with him. My employer has employee housing, which I moved out of, to move in with him. It only costs about 0 a month, which includes internet, cable, and utilities. I now pay for half of rent, food, and utilities (we don’t have cable or internet) which is about 0 a month. I also fill up my gas tank every three days, which is about a week or 0 a month. When I lived at work, I never had to fill up my gas take. So, by living with him, I am spending 0 a month. I also get 50% off food, at work, so my food bill has gone up too.

I have about ,000 in school debt, which I am trying to pay off, ,000 down and counting, so by not living with him, I could be paying off my debt a lot faster.

But, my biggest problem is, that I love my boyfriend or this would be an easy decision. We love each other, our relationship is great, and we really communicate well… not to mention he is the only guy I have been with… who I click with intellectually, emotionally, and ***SEXUALLY***

I am 26, so I only have 4 years left before I turn 30 (I hear your 20’s are your best years to date and find a quality mate) and nine years to have healthy babies, without a huge risk (I’d like to have between 2 and 4 kids).

My career is going down the tubes, so my boyfriend’s career can flourish, I work way more than I ever expected, at a job I don’t like, I dislike where I live (which makes me unhappy), and I am sacrificing so much (he isn’t sacrificing anything, but personal space and alone time. He also spends less money with me living with him) all for a man who is unsure.

I know that this will be a personal choice, but I really need your advice.

Would employees acknowledge freelance work experience? I’ve been doing quite a lot of freelance writing jobs right after I graduate from college and reviews on my online profile are quite impressive. Should I include those on my job resume?

I want to work for a company that cannot hire people from my state. However, my good friend lives in another state where they can hire. The job is telecommuting. I wouldn’t mind if my checks were sent to her house. What would the tax implications be for me, if I did this? For her? And is it legal? Is there any way to do it legally if not? Thanks :)
Just to add details I should have before: this is telecommuting work, freelance work, so it is not unusual for me to have about 10 employers a year. I file 1099s, not W2s. I just don’t want to do anything I can get in trouble for….thanks :)

There is me (35 weeks pregnant with baby #1) and my fiance. We live in apartments that are based on 30% of our income a month which is 1400 so our payment each month is 1. We are currently struggling to keep up with our rent with a light bill tv bill car payment all that good stuff we are constantly running behind on our rent. I have done some research on Section 8 housing because our parents have told us to look into it but from what I understand is they will only pay what is greater than 30% of your income. An example from what I found on the net is if your income is 00 and you want to stay at a home for 0 you will have to pay 30%… 0 and the Section 8 will cover the rest so if this is true are we doomed forever to pay 30% of our income 1????? I don’t have a job he does am I not right in saying that they will calculate that 3 people will be living off of his income so as to help us out or are we stuck at 1 no matter what? I could really use the help and any internet web sites would be of great help. Thank you.
i failed to mention we live in Nothern Alabama.. not sure if that makes a difference or not.
why in the world are you posting if you aren’t answering my question…..
i live in cullman county =)

I was working for a company that employs people from home to do customer service, telecommuting. When I finished with one of my calls, i placed the system’s answering service on Personal time so that no more calls would come in and I could go and check out what was going on during that moment. I began to curse but did not know that the system did not release the last call although the customer was not on the phone, but randomly, there are times when certain team managers listen to the employee’s calls to monitor them. It just so happens that on that particular call I was being monitored, but I thought the system released the call, which essentially is the system’s malfunction because it is supposed to release after each call. Later on, they notified my team manager, she emailed me about what happened and i replied by apologizing and explaining the situation. Then she sent instant messages to everyone letting them know that when you are on Personal Time, to ensure that the call has released and place the phone on mute because it might still be recording. She later on that day also emailed me later on that day a statement that she had copied and pasted to me via email stating where they have written under the following heading:[B][U]Egregious Call Berhavior."Swearing or obscenities before, during, or after call: Immediate Termination." and later on that day I got a call from HR that they were going to release me because of the incident.

I was not introduced to this notice/policy until after the fact, and later on when i fully read it, it is a bit confusing and vague

The information i am trying to get is if I have a case that I can take to a lawyer to get my job back and of course get my lost wages, because other than that, I was excellent. They use a scoring system in which you must maintain a 97% or above and I always achieved 100%.

Was I terminated unjustifiably? Especially since this was brought to my attention after the fact and the system did not release the call as it is supposed to, or do they have the jurisdiction over me regardless of the facts, especially since no obvious harm was done to any clients nor was it a confrontation with any other employee?

Thanks.

Hi there,

I am in the process of trying to sell my online web design business. I have been approached w/ many different proposals but this one has me liking it. I will be able to stay on with the business while getting help with it at the same time to grow it. – my main reason for selling is that I don’t have the time anymore.

How does a 50% partnership on a business work? (specifically that of an online business). Net revenue was ,000 last year and I have heard responses from people that because I am the business, they are not sure revenue can sustain at that rate.

Does the person who wants 50% buy into the business for one lump sum? How is this sum calculated? Is it paid out annually or just once?

This is how it was worded to me:

They would buy an agreed percentage of the business based on expected PROFIT
based on past trends of monthly income. The revenue for each job would be
split 3 ways – 1. The Admin side of the job, dealing with client
communications etc. (15%), 2. The design/development work (60%), 3. Profit
(25%).

Example: If we were 50% partners and we got 3 jobs in one month totaling
.5k. If I were busy with the family but still had a bit of time to deal
with the admin side of the 3 jobs but not do the actual jobs and they did
these. The breakdown would be…

Me (CURRENT OWNER): 5 (15% of the total for admin work) + 2.50 (50% of the profit)
= 37.50
Them (PROSPECTIVE BUYER): 00 (60% for design work) + 2.50 (50% of the profit) = 62.50

The benefits of this are that there is guaranteed income from the profit
based on your percentage stake in the business as well as being rewarded
for the amount of time you can invest (Salary). All the percentages etc.
can be changed to something both parties agree on.

How would the total buy in be calculated? I’m pretty confused as to how this whole thing works.
What kind of contract would be needed? Lawyer?

THANKYOU in advance!

I am looking to make a decent salary with a legitimate telecommuting position – no stuffing envelopes, paying for a list, taking surveys but a real job with a company that exists outside the internet and has benefits.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

What is the MAXIMUM number of days per year that a Canadian citizen can stay in the US without having to get a visa, or being classified as a "permanent resident", or a US "immigrant"??

If a Canadian citizen has homes, family & friends on both sides of the border, a 100% "telecommuting" job that can be done from ANYWHERE in the world, and wants to divide their time between Canada, the United States, and travel to other countries, what is the MAXIMUM number of allowed days that they can stay in the United States WITHOUT having to get a visa, green card, or be categorized as a "legal alien immigrant" or "permanent resident"??

I work for a university and no one commutes, except for maybe a few IT guys, but I don’t work in IT. I want to telecommute just one day a week. I don’t do student services so it’s not like I have to always be there to assist anyone. My work is pretty independent for the most part. All state employees aren’t even getting our usual 3% raise this year because the economy is so bad. Instead we’re getting a 2.5% raise but we have to do furloughs which I don’t care for too much. I don’t even care about that 2.5 or 3% raise. I would forfeit that if I could just telecommute. I know I’m a good worker and was promoted shortly after I started. Job performance will not be an issue. My concern is that this is a school environment in which 99% of the employees have to physically be at work. How can I make the case for telecommuting?

I just lost my job and its almost time for rent and I cannot find anything out there! I need something to make money asap. I know that I can use my computer to make money but Im not really sure how. I have done a lot of research looking up different jobs online but all the telecommuting jobs take some time for you to get a call back. I would be very interested in direct sales but then again there is always that week waiting period for you materials, then a week in training, ect… What about those data entry sites? Any of those work? Im really not into paying any money up front, Ive tried that and never got any more replies. Ive also tried surveys but I dont have the money to invest in all of those free trials. Does anyone have any good ideas for online work such as data entry, surveys that dont ask for money but maybe just pay you a direct check, what about that project payday site… is that real? Im looking for maybe at least 100 a week realistically starting off, so really serious
Serious answers only please i really need some good advice and no im not looking to get rich quick
And I have a baby so I really need the income and quick or im not going to have anywhere to live.

I currently live and work in Dallas, Texas and enjoy no State Income Tax. I have an opportunity to return home to Cincinnati, Ohio while maintaining my job in Dallas through a Remote Work program or a Telecommute. Part of the agreement is that I will travel to Dallas frequently (probably 1 week each month). I would be living in an apartment in Ohio for the remainder of month. I will not own a home, I only rent. If I were to get an apartment in Dallas rather than staying in hotels, could I use that apartment as a "Primary Residence" and avoid Ohio Income Tax?
Thank you for the responses. The consensus is clear: this is not a good idea. I am still curious about the rationale. Addressing some of the reasons given: I have family in Ohio now, but am still a Texan, I have friends in both places, I would have possession in both places (furniture, clothing, possibly a vehicle), I call Ohio home now (I know this is not what you meant, but it is still an shaky argument). The only consistent explanation is that I spend more than 50% of my time in Ohio. Is this really the rule? What about people who spend most of their lives traveling on business? If they’re away from home most of the year, do they avoid tax? My employer would list my Texas address in their system, my paychecks would go to the Texas apartment. I would simply spend more time away from home than in it. I’m not trying to be argumentative (and I will probably check with a tax professional at some point), I would just like to know if there is a definite rule.
To sbinlb: I would be paying for a hotel anyway. If a week in a hotel would cost the same as a month of rent (which is likely), then the question is "Which is more: Cost of utilities at apartment or Savings from Income Tax".
For those who are curious: I found the answer here http://tax.ohio.gov/divisions/ohio_individual/individual/residency_status.stm In my case, the killer is "You spent no more than 182 contact periods in Ohio during the taxable year" and possibly also that I had a domicile in Ohio. Looks like this isn’t an option. Thanks for all the advice!
