Filing NY and CA income taxes? Earned CA income before moving to CA.?

Friday, March 12th, 2010

I took a job in the second half of 2008 from a company in CA. After a few months of me working for them (telecommuting, effectively), they moved me to CA.
I earned roughly half of my income from them as a resident of NY, and the other half while as a resident of CA.

When filing my NYS and CA income tax returns, I’m confused as to how to divide up my income.
From what I’ve gathered via Turbotax’s questions, NYS wants me to claim all the income I earned while I was living in NY, regardless of the source, and CA wants me to claim all income earned from CA sources, even before I became a resident of CA.
Basically, it seems like there’s an overlap of that few months of income at my new job that both states want me to claim.

Does anyone have experience with this, or any clearer understanding of the situation? I hope I’ve explained this well enough.

Thanks in advance!

When is it too soon to ask about telecommuting?

Monday, January 11th, 2010

I just landed a great new job with a growing corporation. This is a big career move for me and I’m pretty excited. Unfortunately, my s.o. is disabled and needs to be cared for during the day for at least three hours a day. It is killing me to be away at work for so long knowing that he is home alone and needs help. I could completely do my job from my house, even if it was for 12 hours a week. I may have bitten off more than I can chew, but options are limited financially. My boss and I have already arranged for me to have Fridays off and work 4 10’s mon-thurs. But now I feel like I am missing a lot that takes place during the week since I only work 4 days. Would it be out of line for me to talk to my boss about the possibility of telecommuting? I’ve only been there for 3 weeks, but things are going great so far.

I have full time telecommuting job. Is it legal to get another full time job?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

For this new job, I need to be in the office. But I think I can handle telecommuting job before/after work or during weekend. (I just need to get things done. When I work is not terribly important for telecommuting job.)

Is this Legal? I am reading lots of posts that it is in yahoo answers page, but also saw someone saying it is not legal. I can’t find legal documents that states it is legal or illegal.

Am I required to tell my employers? They are in different industry and not competitor whatsoever. (no conflict of interest in that matter)

I really want to know definite answer. I read people who have done it, but it looks like it is in different shift like 9am-5pm, 6pm-2am. In my case, it can overlap, in somewhat similar like a writer for wallstree journal (I am not writer) writing for another freelance job while he is in the office…

Thanks in advance. I don’t know how this will turn out, I might quit one job (most likely) in a few months IF I can’t handle both
Yes, It is legitimate full time position. I get salary and small year end bonus.
I have not signed any kind of agreement other than standard employment agreement which didn’t say anything about not having another job…

Legitimate professional telecommuting jobs?

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

My wife is beginning to search for a new job and would prefer and work from home/telecommuting job. She is looking for legitimate opportunities in her current field (accounting/operations/logistics). She is not interested in any type of online marketing, MLM, sales, etc…. Any ideas or suggestions of a good place to look for professional telecommuting jobs?
