I want to include in a paper i am writing, examples of firms that have not succeeded in starting telecommuting in their organization. Maybe they started and later on failed because of the change in the structure of the organization or something else happened. send examples with links to sources please.
Thanks in advance.

I’m not really familiar with the tax rate in Boston. Currently I live in Florida. I will be moving to Boston and telecommuting in January for the same job (so I am assuming I’ll be taxed the Massachusetts rate). That said, what would be my estimated tax $$$ (federal included, I claim 1 dependent and take a standard deduction) if I make 80,000? I will be renting an apartment as well (00/mo) and think I heard I can get some type of state tax credit for that…?
Thank you!
I should have said I claim myself. I don’t have any dependents. Single, no children. Think college grad with a very good job but no assets (and thankfully no debt).

I’d love to find something to do online at home that doesn’t involve selling or a large investment. I’m very experienced with computers and thought about trying to get involved with telecommuting through a reputable company. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Telecommuters enjoy working at home because it gives them more control over their schedules while removing the distractions that are part of the workplace. Realizing that they are no longer under the watch of a supervisor, however, some workers abuse their telecommunicating privileges. What are the risks to business of allowing employees to telecommute? At what point is an employee abusing the freedom afforded by telecommuting? In your view, what kinds of activities or behaviors constitute such abuse?

I’ve been working for the company for many years, am highly regarded and valuable. I’ve shown the ability to work independently from my home and remote work sites many times in the past.
I’m worried my boss may feel betrayed for some reason if I inquire about telecommuting from another city (long story, only temporary though for like 6 months). I would assure him that I would drop the idea if he doesn’t like it, but I wouldn’t want it to hurt our working relationship going forward, so I’m apprehensive in asking.

My hubby’s employer is cutting costs, and has asked him to work from home full time, starting very soon. We had planned on me being a stay at home mom when we have kids, but now with him working at home, I was wondering if me working part time during the day might work, since he will be home. Is it really possible to provide infant care, while telecommuting, or will it impact the quality of work too much? What about when the child is a bit older? At what age would this be appropriate?

I commute 42 miles to & from work, each way, every weekday, so 84 mi./day total. Hearing that gas may hit .75/gallon this summer, I want to start car pooling. The manufacturing plant where I work is pretty isolated, and I can find only one person whose schedule fits mine and who lives close enough to my route to work to make it worthwhile.
My only concern is that I am a married man, and she is an attractive, single woman. She & I both work in professional positions, me as a software engineer, her as a product data coordinator. Telecommuting would save me around /month, but would people talk? My wife & I need to save money because she lost her job in January.
Also, if you were married, how would you feel about your spouse car pooling with an attractive member of the opposite sex, especially if you knew they were going to be in a car together for around an hour total every day? Would it worry you at all, or would you be comfortable with it?
Thanks everyone for all the incredibly interesting input! Although I have decided to go ahead and do it (gas went up AGAIN last night), I still appreciated hearing from people who said not to do it. I appreciated yours too,
elvlayarvvi, even though your wording was very strong — I did not give you a thumbs down!
We start Monday. Wish me luck!
PS to Pure Evil — That was so NOT an evil answer! An evil answer would have been, "Don’t even tell your wife you’re doing it. Just get this woman in the car with you and start working on the seduction!" See, you’re not evil!

I’m having a little trouble with deciding where to get my tattoo. It’ll be my first – a purple Daylily. (purple= mourning and daylily because they only live for a day – in honor of my son who passed the day he was born.) I’m your average 30 year old, slighly overweight midwesterner. I am a professional – but in a very casual work environment (soon to be telecommuting from home). I’m thinking I want this tattoo behind my neck, the top of my foot, on the inside of my wrist, etc. Any suggestions?
I have a 16 inch scar from having cancer, at least a flower isn’t disfiguring.

I have a person living in England who is interested in hiring me for telecommuting from America. He is a citizen of the UK.
Since those here in America working as self employees are penalized by a huge self employment tax that brings the total taxes to at least 40%, and he would have to pay so much more to compensate, we are thinking of having me work as an employee instead of a contractor. Is this even possible and what would be involved in doing this? My current research just gives me answers to the wrong question when I try to find out myself.
To answer why not ramp up the pay …
Because that is not a solution to the problem!!! He would have to ramp it up so much its likely I would not get the job! Stop wasting bandwidth if you are not going to read the question.

1. Knowledge workers dominate today’s business environment. However, many industries still need workers who do not fall into the category of knowledge workers. What industries still need skilled workers who are not knowledge workers? Can you see a time when these jobs will be replaced by knowledge workers? Can you envision circumstances that would actually cause an economy to do an “about-face” and begin needing more non-knowledge skilled workers that knowledge workers?
2. The three key resources in management information systems (MIS) are information, information technology, and people. Which of these three resources the most important? Why? The least important? Why?
3. Telecommuting is like everything else: it has a good side and it has a bad side. What are some of the disadvantages or pitfalls of telecommuting? How can these be avoided?
4. As an information-literate knowledge worker for a local distributor of imported foods and spices, you’ve been asked to prepare a customer mailing list that will be sold to international cuisine restaurants in your area. If you do so, will you be acting ethically? Suppose you don’t consider the proposal ethical. What will you do if your boss threatens to fire you if you don’t prepare the list? Do you believe you would have any legal recourse if you didn’t prepare the list and were subsequently fired?
5. Consider the ATM system that is now worldwide. How does it address your personal dimensions of time, location, and form? Besides just tracking what transactions you’ve completed using an ATM, what other information might your back want to know and use concerning your use of the ATM system?
6. In addition to using neural networks to monitor credit card fraud. The same companies also use neural networks to determine whether or not you are creditworthy. By feeding in thousands of credit card applications. The neural network develops a pattern of who is and who isn’t creditworthy. Basically, the neural network compares you credit application to those of past ones and recommends and action. What do you think about that? Should you be given or denied a credit card based on what others have done (or failed to do)? Why or why not?

Would you like to take distance learning classes? What are the advantages? Can you learn as much without going to class and personally interacting with your instructor and classmates? What might be some of the disadvantages of distance learning? Is there a happy medium? How about going to school for only one class session per week and then attending the others virtually via technology? Is distance learning a good or bad idea?

I am looking for a job in california, telecommuting from Washington. If I get one, do I have to register as a sex offender in california, or only in washington?
It’s very unfortunate that we live in a world full of assumptions. Nevertheless, because I actually want a helpful answers, I will explain a bit, which might stop the onslaught of comments against me.
When I was 13, I hosted a mIRC File Server (something like "bearshare" or "limewire" of sorts) basically, it allowed people to upload and download stuff, using my computer as a "hub" – This was unmoderated by me, but was my property, and thus I suffered the consequences when someone uploaded child pornography on it. I am 24 now, am married and have a son of my own.
Now please, stop commenting if you have nothing helpful to say.

Is a US company allowed to employ a foreigner telecommuting from abroad? E.g. a Frenchman living in Ecuador? Without a greencard/visa/work permit, since he does not live in the US?
If no: Which is the law which interdicts it?
If yes: Under which circumstances? Does he have to open his own company?
How about taxes and customs duty? I think he does not have to pay US taxes if he spends less than 122 days per year in the US (see Wikipedia on "tax exile"). How can the US company handle this?
Which employment laws do apply? I have found this: http://www.gentrylocke.com/showarticle.aspx?Show=242
Hi virus, thank you for the answer. So if it is a multinational company with a branch in the foreign country, it is of course no problem. The branch adheres to local laws and pays local taxes. What if there is no local branch?

Do I need to change any verbs? If so which ones? Add or delete any words. Thanks in advance!
Because of the increasing popularity of telecommuting, it is necessary for us to be more careful in our plans for information security and for our employees’ health and personal safety. We wish it was possible to talk to each employee individually, but that is impossible. Instead, we have prepared a "Telecommuter Employees Guide" which includes structured agreements that specify space, equipment, scheduling, communications, and conditions of employment. The complete guide should be given to whoever is about to begin a telecommuting assignment. We appreciate you discussing the following recommendations with any of your staff members whom are considering telecommuting.
Arranging the Home Workspace
• Create a space where you can expect minimal traffic and distraction.
• Make it comfortable but with sufficient space for computer, printer, and fax.
• Make your workspace off-limits to family and friends.
• Provide proper lighting and telephone service.
Ensuring Information Security
• Remember that you’re home office is an extension of the company office.
• Be careful to protect information and avoid computer viruses.
• Be sure to backup and store data and other information in a safe place.
We do not recommend at-home meetings for telecommuters. By the same token, we suggest using postal boxes rather then home addresses. We also require smoke detectors in home work areas.
To have any questions answered, my assistant or I can be reached at Ext. 310.

I recently got a 30 day free trial of MagicJack service & 2 MJ devices (but I’ll probably order more!)
I’m trying to lower the costs of land-line & cell phone service but still keep it for basic service & emergencies.
I’m in the process of applying for "telecommuting" call-center jobs, but as their systems don’t work with cell phones or VoIP, (which MagicJack technically is) & as MJ is not compatible with alarm systems, satellite etc.,& MJ recommends an emergency backup for 911, I’ll still need to keep the land-line phone.
But all the landline plans are minimum – monthly, as they all include features like call waiting, caller ID, etc. which the jobs I need it for, don’t even allow.
As I’ll be using MJ for all non-work calls, I just need the CHEAPEST basic service with a flat rate unlimited local & long-distance calls (for work). No frills or fancies.
I’m in metro-Detroit. Anyone know the CHEAPEST land-line plans for or under – just for work & emergencies??

I have been a stay at home mom since my baby was born (he is now 16 months old). I have a chance to return back to work, 10-20 hours a week telecommuting from home and ocassional meetings where I have to go to the office. Living on just my husband’s income is tight but do-able as long as we budget. My question is this: should I continue to be stay at home mom til my son is in preschool or should I work part time? My concern with my working part time at my old office is that I may easily get sucked into working after hours (I am a litigator and it’s difficult to turn your back if you are on the case and a rush comes in). I’d especially like to hear from moms who have tried both part time jobs and stay at home and their insight re what they liked better. Does returning to work part time impede or improve quality of time with your child and what other impact, if any, has it had on your, your husband’s and your child’s life? Thanks in advance!

I was working for a company that employs people from home to do customer service, telecommuting. When I finished with one of my calls, i placed the system’s answering service on Personal time so that no more calls would come in and I could go and check out what was going on during that moment. I began to curse but did not know that the system did not release the last call although the customer was not on the phone, but randomly, there are times when certain team managers listen to the employee’s calls to monitor them. It just so happens that on that particular call I was being monitored, but I thought the system released the call, which essentially is the system’s malfunction because it is supposed to release after each call. Later on, they notified my team manager, she emailed me about what happened and i replied by apologizing and explaining the situation. Then she sent instant messages to everyone letting them know that when you are on Personal Time, to ensure that the call has released and place the phone on mute because it might still be recording. She later on that day also emailed me later on that day a statement that she had copied and pasted to me via email stating where they have written under the following heading:[B][U]Egregious Call Berhavior."Swearing or obscenities before, during, or after call: Immediate Termination." and later on that day I got a call from HR that they were going to release me because of the incident.
I was not introduced to this notice/policy until after the fact, and later on when i fully read it, it is a bit confusing and vague
The information i am trying to get is if I have a case that I can take to a lawyer to get my job back and of course get my lost wages, because other than that, I was excellent. They use a scoring system in which you must maintain a 97% or above and I always achieved 100%.
Was I terminated unjustifiably? Especially since this was brought to my attention after the fact and the system did not release the call as it is supposed to, or do they have the jurisdiction over me regardless of the facts, especially since no obvious harm was done to any clients nor was it a confrontation with any other employee?
Thanks.

So I’ve been hired by a software start up in Ireland, however while I will start out in Ireland, I will be spending the majority of my working time telecommuting from NYC or around the country.
The accounting department told me it might be easiest for me to set up as a contract worker and send them invoices every month. This route leads me to believe they want me to set up as an independent contractor/consultant/self-filer. In this manner I believe it’s a 15% tax rate with deductible expenses and quarterly payments to the IRS.
But what I’m wondering is if there’s any other options available for me and my employer? I’m mostly uncertain on one thing, can my company be liable at all for paying U.S. taxes and social security/medicare?

I just landed a great new job with a growing corporation. This is a big career move for me and I’m pretty excited. Unfortunately, my s.o. is disabled and needs to be cared for during the day for at least three hours a day. It is killing me to be away at work for so long knowing that he is home alone and needs help. I could completely do my job from my house, even if it was for 12 hours a week. I may have bitten off more than I can chew, but options are limited financially. My boss and I have already arranged for me to have Fridays off and work 4 10’s mon-thurs. But now I feel like I am missing a lot that takes place during the week since I only work 4 days. Would it be out of line for me to talk to my boss about the possibility of telecommuting? I’ve only been there for 3 weeks, but things are going great so far.

I have a tendency to work better alone than with others and i want to explore a new computer oriented career. are there jobs that would allow me to make a decent yearly salary telecommuting or working from home on a pc. i dont mean taking online surveys! i mean working for a legitimate company with a salary and benefits working in my home pc. the reason i ask is because i am a good worker and very talented and intelligent but have a hard time in the workplace and tend to get stressed out unless i am just left alone to work with myself. i would love to work on a computer doing web design graphic design but am not closed off to other ideas. i would further my education to do this (only have 2 year music degree), and i am a pretty fast typist ( forgive spelling here) but this is also cause i want to start building another business on my owm slowly and need solid income.but being sort of gorophobic is this an even a remote possibility. thanks for all the input it is very much appreciated
